Beginning Psychotherapeutic Work

The initial psychotherapy appointment is an opportunity for us to meet and start to get a general sense of your story, what you may be struggling with and what you may be looking for. This appointment lasts for up to 90 minutes.

We would also use this time to start to think about what will be most helpful for you and what form the therapy will take. This may include thinking about the frequency of sessions and the duration of treatment and is tailored to individual need and circumstances.

We will often need one or two further meetings to continue these exploratory discussions. These sessions also give you an experience of a psychoanalytic approach. Most people find the consultation period a useful experience in itself.

After the initial appointment all psychotherapy appointments last for 50 minutes.

In-depth Psychoanalytic Treatment

For those seeking in-depth and longer term treatment, this typically involves three or more sessions per week and you may also choose to lie on the couch. Having more time enables a deepening trust in the psychotherapeutic process and enables deeper self-knowledge.
